SMITH RESIDENCE

Existing Kentucky Bluegrass was replaced with a native landscape installed in Japanese theme. Water features are used to enhance the "controlled" feel and improve the ambiance of the garden. Red Flagstone patio and walkways were installed to provide access yet make the garden into separate areas. Our goal with the Flagstone stepping pathway is to give the onlooker a reason to slow down and enjoy the flowers. In the sunny backyard, we incorporated a small and practical Canadian Blue Fescue lawn to complement the rockscape. The Canadian Blue doesn't need constant mowing or frequent watering. We planted around the pond with native Verbena, Blue Flax, Thread-leaf Coreopsis, Artemesia Schmidtiana and accented with Siberian Iris and a weeping Cypress tree. Native Chokecherry were used to provide height and define the edges of the landscape. In the shady front yard, we chose 'Blue Spruce' Sedum to cover the ground in front of perennial Foxglove, Coral Bells, Hancock Coralberry and Cranberry Cotoneaster. Variegated shrubs and evergreens such as Ivory Halo Dogwood, Carol Mackie Daphne and Yew were used to provide separation and intimacy. A Cedar gate and horizontal latticework lend to the Japanese theme and further the idea of separate "rooms" within the landscape.
