PATTEN
RESIDENCE
The
residence near Chatauqua had very difficult access. Slopes,
walls and gates made the entire job a challenge. At the heart
of the landscape is a triple falls water feature with an underground
reservoir. The underground reservoir keeps evaporation to
a minimum and prevents mosquitos from hatching in the water
feature. We installed an informal garden around the water
feature to complement the formality of the red stripstone
walls, patio and iron fence. We chose plants to soften the
harsh lines of the surrounding house and landscape. Installed
on top of a moss rock retaining wall, the plants were picked
to add height and cover the ground and creep over the front
of the wall in time. There is interest in this landscape from
summer through winter. Miscanthus grasses, Joe Pye Weed, Atlas
Daisy, Jupiter's Beard, Dwarf Mugo Pine and an assortment
of Irises provide constant color for this garden. This landscape
turned out to be just breathtakingly beautiful because the
garden and moss rock wall is at eye-level to the viewer.
